Customizing Opportunity Product and Quote Product Layouts
Administrators control which fields appear on Opportunity Line Items (also called Opportunity Products) and Quote Line Items (Quote Products), and in what order, through Page Layouts.
On this page:
What the layout controls
Editing the Multi-Line Layout changes the field columns shown when adding or editing Products. Adding or editing Products from an Opportunity or Quote record’s Related tab opens the Manage Products page, which is where those columns appear.
The grid displayed on the Related tab itself is controlled separately, by updating the Opportunity’s or Quote’s Related tab.
Fields
All standard and custom field types can be used, calculated fields included.
Where a Quote and an Opportunity are synced, standard and custom fields matching exactly on name and data type sync automatically. A Quote Product custom field with the same name and data type as an Opportunity Product custom field receives that field’s contents when the Quote is synced. Dependent fields are supported by this sync.
⚠️ A Quote Product field with no Opportunity Product counterpart is one-directional. It can be set, changed, and edited on the Quote, but nothing copies back to the Opportunity Products without a matching field.
Customizing the layout
- Go to System Settings > Objects and Fields.
- Select Opportunity Product or Quote Product. Both follow the same steps.
- Click Page Layouts.
- Select Opportunity Line Item Layout.
- Click Edit Multi-Line Layout.
- To add a field, select it in Available Columns and click the right arrow.
- To remove a field, select it in Selected Fields and click the left arrow.
- To reorder, select a field in Selected Fields and use the up and down arrows.
- Click Save Fields.
- Add or remove fields from the record as needed. Check that the fields in the Details section match those in the Multi-Line Layout.
- Click Save Layout.
Limiting discounts with a validation rule
Object validation rules can stop users applying discounts that are too steep.
- Click the profile icon and select System Settings.
- Click Objects and Fields.
- Select Quote Products or Opportunity Products.
- Click Validation Rules, then New Rule.
- Enter the Rule Name and the Error Message shown when the rule blocks a save, and choose the Error Location on the record page.
- Paste this into Rule Formula:
if(Record.Discount_Offered__c > 15){ return
Validation.IsError;}else{ return Validation.IsValid;}
- Click Create Validation Rule.
This blocks discounts over 15%. Replace 15 with any number between 1 and 100.
See Object Validation Rules for the full procedure and further formulas.
