Managing contact titles
A contact’s title lives on the link between them and their organization, not on the contact record itself.
A contact’s title can live in two places: on the link between them and an organization, and as a Title field on the contact record itself.

How titles work
Contacts connect to organizations through links, and each link carries its own detail. That’s where a contact’s title at that organization is recorded, which is what allows one person to hold different roles at different organizations. So if someone is a board member at one company, a writer for a local charity, and a representative for another, you can see all their connections and titles right from their contact record.
There is also a Title field in the contact record itself. This can be entered on its own, or with a primary organization, and it displays on the Related tab with the primary organization. For all linked organizations, the titles are visible with the contact’s links in the Related subtab.
If you would like a unique field for every contact’s title independent of any link, you can create a custom field for your contacts called “Title” or “Occupation.”
Where to edit a contact’s Role or Title field
You can enter or edit a contact’s role or title in three situations:
- When creating or editing a contact. When you enter a title and select an organization, the contact will also be linked to that organization.
- When editing an existing link. From the Related subtab, click the three dot menu and select Edit Link. You can also add or edit the role from the Links section by moving your cursor over the link and clicking the Pencil/Edit icon that appears.
- When adding a new link.
