Tracked Custom Events
Custom events let you track Prospect actions specific to your site, beyond the events Marketing tracks by default.
On this page:
How they work
An admin defines a custom event, and when a Prospect triggers it, Marketing records it. The event then appears on the Prospect’s timeline, where it can be expanded for detail, and in reporting through the Tracked Custom Event Report.
Triggering a custom event requires adding JavaScript to your site, so this depends on the same web tracking setup as everything else in that layer.
Using custom events
Once recorded, a custom event feeds several other features:
- Prospect timeline: appears in the Prospect’s activity timeline, expandable for detail.
- Prospect Scoring Models: select Prospect Custom Event as the rule type, then choose the specific event, to score Prospects based on whether they’ve triggered it.
- Journeys: a Check step can test whether a Prospect has completed a custom event, branching the Journey based on the result.
- Dynamic List rules: a rule can filter on whether (and within what time window) a Prospect has completed the event.
- Reporting: the Tracked Custom Event Report, under Visitor Reports, brings all custom event activity into one place.
Managing custom events
To edit one: go to System Settings > Feature Settings > Tracked Custom Events, find it in the list, and open it by clicking its name or its three-dot menu and selecting Edit This Tracked Custom Event. Click Add Event to save your changes.
⚠️ Changing the category or action code breaks the link to existing timeline entries. Past events already recorded under the old codes stop displaying on Prospect timelines entirely; only new events logged under the edited codes show going forward.
To delete one: find it the same way, open its three-dot menu, and select Delete This Tracked Custom Event. Confirm on the popup that follows. A deleted event disappears from Marketing entirely, including as a past event on any Prospect’s timeline.
Example JavaScript for triggering these events is available for developers who need to fire them programmatically.
